Agate

Agate surfaces are an exclusive natural-stone choice with a unique, flowing pattern. Agate is a translucent semi-precious stone, often used in backlit decorative surfaces where the pattern and deep tones come fully to life. GMI makes decorative surfaces, panels and accent surfaces from agate, all to measure.

What is agate? Agate is a natural semi-precious stone characterized by clear color bands and a flowing pattern. Every agate slab is a unique creation of nature, so no two surfaces are ever exactly alike. The colors range from warm browns and golds to cool blues and greens.

Where to use agate. Agate is best suited to feature decorative surfaces: wall panels, bar tops, backlit accent surfaces and special bathroom solutions. Like onyx, agate is delicate and porous, so for heavy kitchen use we recommend more hard-wearing granite or quartz.

Caring for agate. Clean an agate surface with a soft damp cloth and a pH-neutral product. Seal the surface to protect it, avoid acids and heavy objects directly on the surface, and wipe up spills right away. With careful use, agate keeps its shine and translucency for a long time.

Frequently asked questions. Is agate suitable for a kitchen countertop? Agate is better suited to decorative surfaces; as a kitchen worktop it is possible by special order. Can agate be backlit? Yes, translucent agate is excellent for backlit panels.
